NYC School Halloween Portraits: A Marathon of Costumes, Imagination and Smiles

It’s no secret that I adore Halloween. There’s just something so fun about seeing kids and parents get creative as they find that perfect costume, add their own little details, and fully get into character for trick-or-treating and all the Halloween events that fill October.

Halloween at schools is especially magical. There’s something about being able to dress up and do something completely different in a place that’s usually all about learning. The vibes are just different in the best way and the excitement is contagious!

This year, I set up a little Halloween photo marathon during a school’s Halloween event and it ended up being one of my favorite events yet.

I set up my Halloween backdrop, got the lighting just right, and one by one (kids, siblings, friends and sometimes families), came up for their moment to give their all in front of my camera. The energy was amazing! I got to meet so many wonderful families I might not have connected with otherwise.

Some of the costumes were so creative; everything from superheroes and sparkly witches to silly food outfits and tiny cartoon characters. Each child brought their own personality, and I loved bringing it out even more as I captured those little moments of confidence, joy, and pure imagination.

The feedback from parents has been so heartwarming. Many told me how much they adore the photos. I’m really grateful to the PTA for putting together such a fun event and for inviting me to be a part of it. As a family and children’s photographer, I see it all the time; kids’ energy, imagination, and pure joy make every photo magical, and school events are no different.

With the holidays quickly coming up, I’m already planning winter sessions, then something sweet for Valentine’s Day, and possibly something lively and colorful for spring down the road. These school mini sessions are such a fun way to celebrate each season and capture memories that parents will treasure for years to come.

Here are some of the images I captured that evening:
